مَحْسُود
maḥsūd — the one envied Passive — the victim
إِذَا حَسَدَ — when he envies. Al-Sa'di: حَسَد becomes harmful when it is acted upon — when the envier wishes for the blessing to be removed or works to harm. Mere feelings of envy that one suppresses are not sinful — it is when they activate that the danger begins.

The Eye — Real and Confirmed

The Prophet: العَيْن حَق — the evil eye is real. Ibn Kathir: حَسَد includes the evil eye — when someone looks at a blessing with envy, harm can follow by Allah's permission. The remedy: recite this surah, say MashAllah, and seek refuge in Allah.

🔄

The Oldest Sin

Al-Sa'di: ḥasad was the first sin on earth — Iblis envied Adam. And the first human murder was from ḥasad — Qabil envied Habil. The surah ends with the most ancient and most persistent source of human harm.

💚

The Antidote to Envy

Al-Sa'di: the antidote for the one being envied is تَوَكُّل (trust in Allah) and these two surahs. The antidote for the envier is شُكْر (gratitude) and remembering Allah's wisdom in His distribution of blessings. Gratitude kills envy at the root.
